Gangotri Dham is the main religious places among the Char Dham Yatra and located 19 km before of Gaumukh glacier that is the origin of Ganga river and where the stream of life, touched earth for the first time. Gangotri is the starting point of Ganga River where people can assume the water in the form of Amrit. From the origin place river is called Bhagirathi and after a confluence with Alaknanda River at Devprayag it attains the name Ganga.

The shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3048 mts from sea level in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand State. Millions of tourist & pilgrims come here to visit this place during the Char Dham yatra season. Due to the heavy snowfall temple close for six months and reopens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya every year which falls in the month of May.

According to Hindu mythology and other holy books King Sagar did a Ashwamedha Yajna by leavening a white horse as according to the procedure of this worship to fame his glory and horse need to be recaptured. But unfortunately horse reached in the ashram of Kapil Muni, who was in deep meditation, the son of king, Sagar thought he stolen this horse and started abusing to Kapil muni. Kapil Rishi got angry and opened his third eyes and burnt them out. Bhagiratha, the grandson of King Sagar meditated to please the Goddess Ganga to give salvation or Moksha to his ancestors and liberate their souls. Goddess Ganga came from heaven to wash away the sins of King Bhagiratha’s predecessors. To minimize the immense impact of Ganga's falling from heaven, Lord Shiva received into his matted locks of hair.

Gangotri Dham Yatra Tour Itinerary for 2 Nights and 3 Days


Itinerary
Day: 1 Rishikesh – Uttarkashi (180kms/6hr)
Morning drive Uttarkashi from Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun.

Day 02: Uttarkashi - Gangotri - Uttarkashi (100kms/3hr each side)
Proceed to Gangotri, on the route visit Harsil village, Bhagirathi river along the beautiful view of the Himalayas and after Gangotri Darshan drive back to the Uttarkashi.

Day 03: Uttarkashi – Rishikesh (180kms/6hr)
Morning drive back to Rishikesh and visit Laxman Jhulla, Ram Jhulla and Ganga Arti then drop to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun (Train Station/Bus Stand/Airport).
